What Narrative techniques/theories are used, how are they used differently to tell the countries story

Magical Realsem is used to drive the story forward. The films both use first person to see through the eyes of two characters which are seen as being very child like. The magical realism usage in the films can help send the characters on there missions. For MACRO they both have links to how we represent children by them going into a world of there own and to escape from the real world. Pans labyrinth uses the escapism to a world where there is no war and her family arnt the way they are. Amalie goes into a world where she can see how she wants the France to to portrayed. Amalie had critics moan saying that it wasn't like the real france this can be down to the use of magical realism. With Amalie the magical relaisem is bening seen a fairy tale with the way she wanted to be a princess with the toys moving and tucking her into bed. Ofillia goes into a world where what she sees can be some what hrroific where monsters and evil still lerk. What with spain being at war and a girl is wrapped up in all this her fantasy can be graphic where as Amalie is in the city of love and has colorful lighting and dresses bright.

The historical context can also links to the values and culture of spain being that they are seen as being very religious and god fearing but at the end Ofelia step dad kills her and feels no remorse which isn't seen as a religious thing to do. Both countries had there own problems which drove the story to make these two characters. Ofelia made a world of her own and chose to block out the harshness of the war and Amalie wanted to re live her childhood by wanting to dive into a world of love and being a princess. Not much can be said for a message from Amalie which can drive the narrative but in Pans Labyrinth we can get messages of getting a better life from the one you was born into or going through a re-birth to a new world.

They both use the same film technique of a child wanting to escape the world and be in a world of there own . Looking more in depth in to this each film shows there country in there own way, i.e the spanish civil war being the heart of the film Pans and in Amelie that paris is the city of love. The style of pans is very dark and gloomy and is set to shows that Ofelia is very lonely, but in Amelie it is bright and is shown that she is happy and she wears bright colours. In Amelie Princess Diana had a big impact on Amelie as she is the princess in the film. In pans Ofelia is more of the hero than the princess.

Magical Realism

What is Magical Realism?

Magical Realism is the power of imagination that can been seen as reality through the eyes of the person imagining it. Its an effect that is used to show what a character is feeling how they see things around them. This can only be seen through the characters eyes and no one else can see what they are getting across. It can give messages of child like characters where they are seen as looking old but can have life like images around them.

Why is it used

It is used to convey an escape from the real world that a character can see to try and break free from real life events.

How is Magical Realism used in Amalie

Amalie is seen as a child like character where by we can see her emotions and what she is feeling like through her eyes which no one else can see. Magical Realism is used in scenes where she is to nervous to talk to someone so she turns to water. This shows the nervous and how shes turning into water which is a feeling we get when we are nervous, Through Magical Realism it takes that and actually shows her turning to water.

Another scene would be where Amalie is about to to sleep but with her child like mind she imagines her Amalie toys are putting her to bed. Using Magical Realism we see this as the toys moving and putting her to bed just as she would like to see it.

Where does it come from?

It comes from historical myths from Russia Cuba and India. It started out as a painting in 1925 with a German art critic.

What is recognizable about it?

No one else can see it but it is also seen as a normal emotion or a feeling that the character wants to see that no one else can see. Expresses on what there feelings and position through Magical Realism

Is it a style of a genre?

I would say that it is a Style that can be used in any genre films.

How is different from a fantasy?

It can only be seen through the eyes of the character and is not a world that people can go to its only a thing that more realistic but only through one character. Its diffrent from fansty anyone can be part of it but with Magical Fanstasy we see only what one character is seeing and no one else can see it.

How does link to CHN

Its has fantasy elements with the way she acts. High bridity used in comedy drama. it has a sense of mistory because everyone is okay with it. It can lead a story through imagination by showing a character what to do next by seeing what she is thinking and is done though another character.

White Ribbon

White Ribbon Trailer

White ribbon is a German movie written and directed by Michael Haneke that is set in 1913 - 1914. The films was made in 2009 and is about the memories of an unnamed tailor. The cinematography is in black and white to give it that old time feeling that the director was trying to get across to his audience (Autuers Theory).

Who Needs Films Critics?

When professional print film critics are having to come to have arguments and are challanged by bloggers, Sight and Sounds (which is a international film magazine) looks at the future of criticism itself and makes them find inspiration through there writing - Nick James

What use are film critics?

Films Critics are the people who look at film differently to how we see the film. Most film critics dues to the decline in print film has turned to modern film reviewing ways. Blogs are set up for these reviews to be done in as well as internet videos with clips and images so it is open to a wider audience. This is also free to use as well. The point of a Film Critic is to look at film in a different way to the audience. They mainly focus on there MICRO and MACRO areas such as cinematography as well as seeing if there is a key story behind it and using Auteur's Theory to look at the whole of the film through the directors eyes.

Steven Spielberg

What is his recognisable style?

Spielberg stared out focusing on World wars and putting storys behind it linking the two. In saving private ryan he used the setting with World War 2 and made characters behind it with another task to save private ryan. He wanted to create a bond with all of the soldiers and show that they all have something going on besides the war and how the audience can relate to them. He included clips from the actual war as well to show the audience that sense of what it was like when they was there. He used themes such as Hope, War, Freedom. He mainly focased on making films with big budgets with stuff like massive dinosors and time travel.

What Themes and Messages his Spielberg Interested in through his films?

In ET Steven Spielberg used a small alien to land on earth and ends up being looked after a little boy. The themes we can get from this is Love, Friendship, Brotherhood. It was around this time that many alien films had come out such as Alien by Ridley Scott which gave audiences a fear of these creatures. Spielberg however made a film with aliens in it but showed that our look at Aliens being these beings that abduct us can actually be seen as nice creatures. He showed that we dont actually know what Aliens are like and that if they are horrible beings or not. He gave his audience the message that humans can be friends with people no matter there race or where they are from. The theme of Brotherhood comes in with his other films such as Jaws where 3 men on a boat are getting drunk together and having a good time while capturing a massive great white shark with also shows masculinity and power. He uses this theme in nearly all of his films such as Saving Private Ryan, Band of Brothers and Back to the Future. A HUGE message from his war films which he used in all of his war films was "For one thing I dont think anybody in any war thinks themselves as a hero". He used this message to show that the soldiers are just like ever day people just doing there job and what they are trained to do. He also used grown up films but made them child like by adding such things as Dinosaurs and making children in them as main parts. "He gave a message of When i grow up i still want to be a director"

Is Spielberg an Auteur?

The Co founder of the Auteur is called Andre Bazin. The Theory included parts of a group of cinema enthusiasts who had written for Cahiers Du Cinema. They stated that the film should look and be evaluated on the what the directors personal eye and how they wanted the film to be. The Theory was used by directors to back up the new wave (nouvelle vague) in french cinema. In the 1960's This was then picked up and made into English language for film criticism. The Theory states that the its up to the director to bring there film to life and express there thoughts. This applies to Spielberg though his films. An example of this would be ET where he showed the relationship between ALiens and Humans. He went against the whole humans fighting aliens war and showed the lovable side of it. He used this theory to also use in his other films to relate to what actually would happen if we was placed in a situation with dinosaurs still being in our times. References
